On 1 November 2023, SWISS UMEF organised a major conference led by Mr Guy Mettan, journalist and member of the Grand Council of Geneva, on the economic and political consequences of the war in Ukraine. This conference, titled "The Economic and Political Consequences of the War in Ukraine: Why the World Changed in 2022?", offered an in-depth analysis of the conflict's repercussions on Europe and the rest of the world.

Mr Mettan highlighted the economic impacts of the war, including the recession in Germany and the UK, as well as the economic paradoxes observed, such as Russia's better-than-expected economic performance. Politically, he discussed the lack of willingness for peace from both NATO and Russia and the increasing risks of military escalation in Europe.

Participants appreciated Mr Mettan's rigorous and nuanced analysis, which provided a better understanding of the complex dynamics of the Ukraine conflict and its long-term implications for Europe and the world. This conference reflects SWISS UMEF's commitment to providing a platform for discussion on global issues.
